Also referred to as road scalpings, tarmac planings or road scrapings, road planings are a by-product of the resurfacing of roads and highways. These are created when the surface layer of tarmac is removed by a cold milling machine. The cold milling machine removes asphalt from the surface sub-base and then this material is ready to be recycled.
As a recycled aggregate, the use of road planings is considered environmentally friendly. Not only this but the main material of planings is often bitumen, a natural resource. The use of planings minimises waste and reduces the demand for alternative aggregates, such as quarried aggregates.
As planings are hardwearing and weather resistant, these aggregates are ideal for high-traffic areas, such as car parks. Additionally, planings can also be used as a sub-base in construction projects as well as a void filling material.
According to the U1 waste exemption, you can use road planings to build a track, path or bridleway. This exemption “allows you to use suitable waste rather than virgin raw material or material that has ceased to be waste”.
This recycled sub-base material can be used for a variety of purposes. Road planings are most commonly used for the following applications:
Due to the high fines content, road planings are not suitable to be used as backfill for drainage trenches.
Planings can be purchased online at Mainland Aggregates. We supply unscreened planings (unless otherwise stated) loose by the 8-wheeler load or in 850kg bulk bags. If you require further information about our selection of road planings, please contact us today. We can be reached on mobile at 01234 831108 or by email at info@mainlandaggregates.co.uk.
