20mm All In Ballast is a mixture of coarse aggregate and sand used in concrete to provide bulk and stability. It typically consists of crushed stone, gravel, or recycled materials.
20mm All In Ballast is typically used for creating concrete mixes suitable for foundations, structures, kerbing etc.
Concreting ballast is specifically designed for use in concrete mixes, whereas regular ballast may be used for various purposes such as railway tracks, road construction, or landscaping. Concreting ballast typically has specific size and grading requirements suitable for concrete applications.
Concrete mixes will vary in strength depending on the project undertaken. Typically, a mix used in a domestic environment for tasks such as constructing a shed base would require a mix ratio of 5 parts Ballast to 1 part cement. For heavier applications it may be necessary to seek advice from a structural engineer to ensure the correct strength is used.
For small quantities, ballast, cement and water can be mixed in a wheelbarrow. The amount of water added will vary according to the desired consistency. Larger quantities will require a mechanical cement mixer. It is rarely cost effective to self-mix quantities over 1 cubic metre and thus a ready-mix company may need to be used.
20mm All In Ballast is BS EN12620 2013.
The quality of concreting ballast directly influences the strength, durability, and workability of the resulting concrete. Using high-quality ballast that meets relevant standards and specifications is essential for achieving desired performance outcomes.
