Take a metric tape measure and measure the length, width and depth of the area to be filled. The length and width measurements should be recorded in metres and the depth in millimetres. Now take these figures and enter them into the quantity calculator to reveal the approximate quantity required for your job.
Remember:
1 metre is equivalent to 1000mm or 100cm
1 centimetre is equivalent to 10mm
Silica Sand can be found at numerous locations across the UK with Silica Sand being one of the most commonly found materials in the earths crust. However, there are only a handful of locations where true sub-angular Silica Sand can be found. Mainland Aggregates is one such reputable business that can bring you the finest quality sand at the most competitive prices. With fine sub-angular grains that promote effective drainage and improved compaction, our Silica Sand is perfect for equestrian applications. Although no official standard has been specified for "Equestrian Silica Sand", we are able to identify the properties required which make a particular Silica Sand specification more suited to "equestrian use" and thus suitable for riding arenas, lunges, gallops, race tracks and turnouts. The angular grains lock together to improve firmness, whilst providing a comfortable and cushioned ride.
Our Premium Silica Sand is washed and graded to remove clay and silt which promotes firmness whilst aiding drainage. Whilst Silica Sand has a variety of uses from equestrian to block paving, any Silica Sand with an entirely rounded grain content should be avoided unless used in combination with other products as they cause the surface to ride too deep. Inferior sand may lead to compaction, water-logging and eventual surface failure. If it is cheap there is usually a reason why!
All sands will perform better with moisture and will ride deep when dry unless used in combination with other products or regularly watered. Throughout prolonged dry spells it’s advised that you water Silica Sand to maintain compaction. This, with the addition of the rubber chip and/or fibre, will improve firmness, and the performance of the sand. All newly laid Silica Sand surfaces will require a period of settling before performing at their best although this process can be sped up by rolling and watering.
PLEASE NOTE: Our Silica Sand is not sold by colour. Colour will vary depending on delivery location.

Equestrian Silica Sand is a type of sand specifically selected and processed for use in horse arenas, gallops, and other equestrian facilities. It's characterised by its fine particle size, angular shape, and high silica content.
Silica Sand can be used for riding areas, gallops, lunges, turnouts and canter tracks. Silica Sand can also be used in combination with high quality topsoil for lawn top dressing.
Silica Sand offers excellent drainage properties, good compaction, and consistent footing for horses. Its angular particles interlock to provide stability while also minimising dust and reducing the risk of injury. It typically has a higher silica content and is free from contaminants that could harm horses or affect surface performance. Sharp Sand is much coarser and abrasive than Silica Sand. The coarser particles will cause the surface to ride very deep when dry potentially causing injury to the horse.
Although Silica Sand can be used on its own, we recommend it is installed in combination with our Equus Fibre or Rubber Chip to achieve the best results. Silica Sand used on its own should be laid at 150mm depth, whilst Silica Sand used in combination with other products such as rubber chip should be laid at 100mm depth with a 50mm depth of rubber topping. See our Riding Arena Construction Guide
Silica Sand should be laid by excavator over a Non-Woven Membrane at 100-150mm depth depending on the finished surface. Consistent depth is critical not only to give a firm ride but also to protect the membrane and sub base underneath. For this reason it is essential that a laser level be used. The Sand should be compacted by a vibrating roller in layers to ensure compaction is achieved throughout the full depth of Sand. Silica Sand that is too dry will not compact and thus it may be necessary to add water before rolling. For more information on installation see our Riding Arena Construction Guide
When properly processed and maintained, equestrian silica sand is considered safe for horses. However, it's essential to use high-quality sand free from harmful contaminants and to monitor the surface condition regularly to ensure the safety and well-being of the horses. Silica Sand used in enclosed environments should be watered to prevent dust and horses should be prevented from eating off the surface to avoid sand colic.
Silica Sand is free draining. The coarse grading creates voids between the particles which aide the passage of water.
